Event Information:
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) may sound like bureaucratic paperwork, but they can be one of the most valuable tools for building strong, sustainable Tribal environmental programs. The Tribal TAB team and Tribal TAB Partner Akana hosted an engaging conversation about Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and how they can support Tribal environmental programs on October 29, 2026.
SOPs provide a clear, consistent way to document how work gets done. They can help preserve institutional knowledge, support staff onboarding, maintain continuity when staff or leadership changes, and strengthen the effectiveness and resilience of environmental and response programs.
During the webinar, we demystified SOPs by exploring their purpose, value, and common misconceptions. We discussed the key elements of an effective SOP and shared practical tips for developing procedures that work in real-world Tribal environmental programs—not just on paper. Speakers also shared strategies for writing, implementing, and maintaining SOPs, as well as approaches for gaining staff buy-in and making SOPs a useful part of everyday program operations.
Whether your program is just beginning to develop SOPs or already has procedures in place, this webinar provided practical ideas and a place to start. Participants left with a clearer understanding of why SOPs matter and how they can apply them within their own Tribal environmental or response programs. This webinar was intended for Tribal environmental professionals, program staff, and others interested in strengthening the consistency, continuity, and long-term success of Tribal environmental programs.
